Purpose:      To effectively and efficiently utilize the fire protection systems of a building to the best advantage of the OIC.

Scope:          SOG for suspected fire in a building(s) with sprinklers

Enforcement: All officers are required to comply and ensure that those under their command are adequately trained and comply with that which is outlined in this SOG.

All personnel are responsible to be familiar with this SOG.

Procedure:   Automatic sprinkler Systems (Fire Dept. operations)

1.   First due engine company:

A.        Initiate incident command.

B.  Officer should immediately size up the fire and see that control valves are open. This is most necessary for systems that are not supervised.

C.  Hose lines should be advanced to the fire area to prevent extension of fire and to complete extinguishment. These will be required merely to mop up and extinguish fires in concealed spaces out of the reach of sprinklers. Normally, 1 ¾” lines will be adequate.

D.  Only when the fire is extinguished or under control should control valves be shut off. If the only control is the main valve and the system is to be shut down, orders must first be given to the pump operator to shut down the lines connected to the siamese as these by‑pass the main control valve. Orders to shut down the system may only be given by the incident commander.

2.   Second due engine company:

A.  Connect to proper sprinkler siamese with two 2 ½” lines. Hook up to a hydrant using large suction hose. Start pumping into the system at 150 psi engine pressure after receiving orders from the incident commander.

Two 2 ½” lines can supply 20‑25 heads discharging 20 gpm each.

B.  Pumpers should not be connected to hydrants on private water systems unless it is known that the system can supply both the sprinkler system and the pumper.

3.   Ladder company:

A.  Perform rescue, ventilation and salvage work.

B.  Assist as needed, or as directed by incident commander.

4.   Restoring the system:

A.  It is the responsibility of the fire dept. to see that the property owner restores the system. (reset dry valves, etc.)

B.  If the system cannot be restored, the property owner should leave a watchman at the scene.
